Class Rates (& Yoga Economics) Explained!
A student recently inquired about the difference between our “Standard” and “Accessible” class rates. To answer this, it’s helpful to have some context. As a new studio owner, I’ve found yoga economics are rarely very transparent. For 20+ years, I never knew how much my class teacher was earning! Here’s a quick overview of Yoga Horizons’ finances, including the rational behind our class rates:
Yoga Horizons’ teachers, all of whom have undertaken the rigorous (and multi-year) Iyengar certification process, earn 45% of all student fees paid for a class.
The studio’s fixed overhead (e.g. rent, utilities, internet, insurance, etc) is about $2600 a month.
The Standard Rate ($30/class) is what we ask people to pay (or 10% less if a 5-class package is purchased.
Yoga Horizons and its teachers don’t want to make classes financially inaccessible for those for whom this rate would make them out-of-reach for whatever reason, so we provide an Accessible Rate ($18/class) option.
We operate on an honor system and allow students to choose what fee is right for them with hopefully an awareness of all the economics involved!
