Bob

Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher & Studio Administrator

Bob Whittinghill has been a practitioner of yoga for over 25 years, and teaching Iyengar yoga since 2000. Certified by IYNAUS at the Intermediate Junior level, he cultivates the craft of instruction and the art of yoga through avid studentship and self-practice. He attended the Iyengar Institute in India for more than 4 months of study over 3 visits.

His experience in the creative and performing arts, and his affinity for world civilizations, inform his practice and teaching. Iyengar Yoga embodies a culture. It is rich with traditions, articulated practices, specialized language, iconography and an ethical standard. Bob endeavors that his classes enlighten students on that vast body of knowledge, and inspire them towards their own excavation of, and enculturation into, the opulence of Iyengar Yoga.

Aroused by the power of the spoken and written word, Bob has worked on the editorial staff of the magazines for 2 IYNAUS conventions, Odyssey 2001 and Yantra (2007). He served as the editor-in-chief for Lois Steinberg’s Geeta’s Guide to a Woman’s Yoga Practice, Volume 1 (2005), Steinberg’s 2010 Iyengar Yoga Asana Alternatives: The Neck and Shoulders and has contributed numerous articles and interviews for publication on the subject on Iyengar Yoga. Bob served as Special Events Chair for the successful FROM THE HEARTLAND, the first Iyengar Yoga conference held in Chicago (2011).

Brooks

Brooks

Hatha Yoga Teacher

Brooks reveres yoga, and sees it as an art and science of celestial proportions that also connects deeply into one’s earthly nature. Her classes present an opportunity to explore physical and psychological space. And you are likely to hear a poem.

Learning yoga started in childhood when her grandmother saw it as a way to cool the grandkids down before bedtime, and the fires of inquisitiveness that started as seemingly small flames grew into an inferno of epic proportions in her life story—Brooks now teaches yoga full-time! She feels blessed to have learned from many gifted and inspired teachers.

A workshop with Yoga Circle director, Gabriel Halpern, had a strong influence and Brooks came to the Yoga Circle in 2002 where she contingued to assist in Gabriel’s Gentle class weekly, in addition to teaching her regular classes. She is in awe of the voluminous knowledge, and practical wisdom available in the approach to yoga that B.K.S. Iyengar’s technique presents.

She continues to train with certified Iyengar yoga teachers at Yoga Circle in classes and workshops, and blogs regularly about her personal experience and studies of yoga at brookshall.blogspot.com.

David began yoga in 2000, the year he turned 50, when he was beset by injuries and experiencing great stress from his career as a lawyer who argued cases in the U.S. Supreme Court and other courts. Yoga has also taught him to calm his mind. Having now retired from his law practice, David wants to help others realize the benefits and joy of yoga, and he has special insights into the challenges faced by men and women over 50 as well as by men of all ages. In addition to weekly classes with Bob Whittinghill and Todd Howell, David regularly studies with Lois Steinberg and other senior Iyengar yoga teachers in the U.S. David has also studied with Geeta Iyengar and other members of the Iyengar family in India and elsewhere.

Natasha

Natasha

Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher

Natasha Julius began studying Iyengar yoga as a way to cross-train for the year-round Chicago floor hockey season. She soon traded in her sticks and shin pads for bolsters and blocks, delighted to find a practice that kept her physically and mentally challenged while significantly reducing her risk of being struck by flying objects.

Natasha completed a year-long apprenticeship with Patrina Dobish at the Yoga Circle prior to joining the staff in April, 2006. Teaching has added a deeper dimension to her personal practice and she tries to share her gratitude for this with her students. She approaches each class as she approaches most experiences; with an abundance of good will and humor.

When not practicing or teaching yoga, Natasha serves as features editor for The Beachwood Reporter, a Chicago-based media and cultural criticism website.

Patrina

Patrina

Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher

Patrina Dobish is a Certified Iyengar Intermediate Junior 3 Yoga instructor (CIYT) and a Certified Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT). She has studied yoga her whole adult life. Her continued journey now incorporates studies with senior Iyengar certified teachers. She has studied in Pune India at Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) for 5 months. Her personal practice continues to bring new insights.

Patrina has served a full term on the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the US (IYNAUS) board and has served on several national and regional committees. She also partnered to resurrect the Iyengar Yoga Association of the Midwest (IYAMW) successfully. Locally she has teamed up with Quilombo Cultural Center and The Logan Square Neighborhood Association to provide “Care for Caregivers Program.” She is also the administrator for the Yoga Circle annex, Yoga Tree of Evanston. As of Jan 2020, she is serving a 3 year term on the IYAMW (Iyengar Yoga Association of the Midwest).

Patrina is convinced that yoga as a practical subject (asana and pranayama) leads to yoga as a profound subject. As an accomplished artisan she knows that crafts begin by honing basics; “chop wood – carry water.” The art of the yoga practitioner is similar. Understand fundamentals, and then expand beyond those boundaries with confidence and understanding.

In that way she teaches. She understands that with each decade comes a new set of challenges and opportunities for growth. As a teacher humor and joy are her key tools to guide students into keen focus.
